A deputy commissioner of customs, C. Madhavan, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in Kochi on Tuesday, in connection with smuggling of gold through Kochi airport. He was arrested after being summoned to the office for questioning.
Madhavan is alleged to have helped the alleged kingpin of a wave of recent gold smuggling incidents, identified as Fayaz. The matter had come to light when two women who were smuggling gold through the airport were caught by the customs department.
Their questioning led to the arrest of Fayaz, and in turn the connivance of customs officials was also revealed. In all, four customs officials are suspected to have played a role in the smuggling of gold into the country. India recently hiked the customs duty on gold in an attempt to address the high current account deficit of the country. This has prompted gold smuggling rackets to risk smuggling gold into the country to make a quick buck.
