21 November 2012
Brain Oldenburg, the Professor and Chair of International Public Health, School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University, Australia has led the diabetes prevention trial in Indian state of Kerala.Fully funded by Australia, the move is being carried out to see if cost-effective and small-scale programmes can bring changes to life style of the people, thereby bringing down the number of diabetics.
The trial is being run with cooperation of the Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies (AMCHSS) in Kerala. It will take the charge of improving people’s knowledge about diabetes with attention to the people of all ages.Telephone-Linked Care (TLC) programme will also be the part of the move in which the telephone technology will be used to inform the people about the chronic disease and its management.
“Unless those affected are motivated, it is difficult to achieve the desired treatment goals. It is indeed a challenge for health systems to help diabetics manage their condition better”, said Dr. Oldenburg explaining the need of the reform.
