Ernakulam Broadway Turning to Parking Lot

The Ernakulam Broadway, which was one of the busiest shopping hubs in the city and still attracts large crowds, has now narrowed down literally into a parking lot.The illegal parking in the area makes it difficult for shoppers to move around. Though the merchants in the area have registered complaints with the authorities concerned, the issue is yet to be resolved.
he illegal parking causes difficulties for both the pedestrians and motorists alike. “We have mooted various proposals before the Corporation authorities in order to solve the problem. The roads here are very narrow and bikes and cars parked illegally block the entrance of many a shop. If the situation has to change the authorities should think of setting up parking facilities in nearby areas,” said Ernakulam Merchants Union president T J F Leo Paul.
The Broadway Renovation project mooted under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) has also come to a standstill. Even if the project is implemented, it will not help resolve the parking crisis, for it aims at remodeling the area by keeping its heritage value intact.
