Kerala Fisherman have went to strong boycott for the sea plane service launched by a Bangalore-based private firm connecting the major backwater tourism destinations in the state.Inland-fishermen fear that this fully state-government backed plane service will deprive them of their livelihood.

The six-seater Cessna-206 H amphibian aircraft will run over the water surface for over one kilometer before takeoff or landing near the floating water-drome. Fishing will not be allowed near the takeoff and landing route of the aircraft when the aircraft moves along.

Fishermen allege that in the future, the number of destinations will be raised to 20 and then, there will be hardly any space in the lakes for fishing. Fishing and related activities are banned around one square kilometer from the water-drome. To begin with, the plane lands at Alappuzha and Kumarakom in the Vembanad Lake and near Kollam in the Ashtamudi Lake.

Mr Chandy said it was an experimental service. The aircraft flies for three months, and if it is found that the operation has badly hit the fishermen community, it will discontinue, he said.
