Inspired by the mall culture that has been gripping the city, the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has decided to speed up its plans for setting up an hi-end shopping mall in the city.
The agency, which floated the bids for the facility the other day, said the construction companies which qualify the eligibility criteria will be able to participate in the tender procedures. The tender for the shopping mall that would be set up at Manappattiparambu, is likely to be awarded by October this year, according to GCDA officials.
The GCDA is planning to make use of the 4.75 acres of land that it owns at Manappattiparambu for the purpose. Initially, the facility would be set up at the 2.78 acres out of the total area. “The rest of the space will be utilised for the expansion,” said GCDA chairman N Venugopal.
Two acres of land was handed over to Metro Rail and once they get back the land, it will be utilised for the additional facilities and expansion plans of the shopping mall. “The project will be executed on a build, share, operate, transfer basis. One of the major clauses in the tender will be handing over 30 per cent of the total built area of the facility to GCDA. The minimum floor area of the shopping mall is set as 4 lakh sq ft out of which 30 per cent, that is one lakh sq. ft , will be handed over to GCDA,” Venugopal said.
The shopping mall will be in tune with international facilities with multiplex, game zones and shopping outlets. The design of the facility will be suggested by the agency which will win the contract. “The GCDA will act as a monitoring agency for the project which will be completed in two years,” he added.
