GIS Bases System For Water Resource Management in State

Thiruvananthapuram
State Water Resources Department of Kerala has unveiled plans to launch a GIS-based decision support system which aims to develop an integrated, sustainable and long-term water conservation and management plan for the state. According to an official statement, the state’s 44 rivers are growing increasingly vulnerable over time due to droughts and other crucial environmental and man-made factors. In addition, no authoritative data on critical water resource-related parameters are available making it difficult for decision makers to plan effectively
The State Water Resources Department said that the practice is a sure recipe for a crisis, and would be further exacerbated during drought seasons.Officials of the Irrigation Design and Research Board (IDRB), who are coordinating the project, are looking to integrate the available data with the field-level information to be collected by their own staff so as to build a robust data platform on the GIS.
