Government Give Prize Money of Rs 1 crore to Olympics Medal Winners

The state government will give a prize money of Rs 1 crore to any Malayalee who wins a medal in the forthcoming Olympics, Sports Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the work on the synthetic track at the medical college ground here on Monday.

The Sports Ministry had sanctioned a sum of `5 crore from the funds of the State Sports Council for the first phase of the work. As the work progresses, another `2 crore will be sanctioned.

Budding talents from the State should be groomed so as to bring them to a level where they can qualify for the Olympics, the Minister said.Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes A P Anil Kumar presided over the meet.

The Minister said the construction of the hostel for the Medical College will be completed this year. A sum of `300 crore will be spent for the medical college which would be finished within three years.

Shafi Parambil MLA presided over the meet.

Among the others who were present included M B Rajesh MP, district panchayat president T N Kandamuthan, municipal chairman P V Rajesh, Camco director M M Hameed, medical college principal T B Khullas, District Collector P Marykutty, district president of the Palakkad Athletic Association T Haridas, general secretary of the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi Joby V Chungath and medical college nodal officer S Subiah.

Sportspersons including Anju Bobby George, Arjuna award winner Preeja Sreedharan and Calicut University athletic coach S S Kaimal also participated in the function.They were honoured with a ponnada by Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan.

The sports coaches of different schools and colleges and national games participants were given away trophies by Anju Bobby George.
