The district administration began procedures to dismantle resorts that came up illegally on the shores of Vembanad lake. Notices were served to Kapico Kerala Resort Ltd and Green Lagoon Resort located in Panavally grama panchayat to demolish their illegal constructions within 10 days on Thursday.
A revenue team led by district collector N Padmakumar visited the resorts on Thursday and issued notices. The Supreme court and Kerala high court had directed to demolish the illegally constructed resorts in August.
The high court had directed to demolish Kapico resort in ward 8 of the grama panchayat. While Supreme Court had delivered a verdict to demolish Green Lagoon Resort in ward 16 of the same panchayat.
“These two courts delivered the verdict after it found that these resorts were set up violating Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Act and they had encroached the lake. We have given them 10 days for demolishing the illegal constructions and if they fail to do it, the district administration will demolish their buildings. Kapico Resort Group will need more days as they have many buildings and Green Lagoon Resort Group can demolish all their illegal constructions within 10 days,” said the collector N Padmakumar.
The Supreme Court ruled that the protection of the lake, which was undergoing severe environmental degradation due to increased human interventions, was a matter of serious concern for Kerala as well as the country. The court also observed that the lake should be saved as it supports a large aquatic biodiversity and acts as an important habitat for migrating birds.
