Chennai
Following complaint from a patient, the regional drug inspector’s office at Kozhikodu has raided and seized 30 unauthorized blood bags from a hospital located in Kozhikodu city and a case of violation of Section 18 C of Drugs & Cosmetics Act was registered. Case of violation of Section 22(I) (cca) of D&C Act was also taken for stocking of drugs without invoice.
All the confiscated products were manufactured by Hindustan Lifecare Limited at Thiruvananthapuram, said Shaji M Varghese, drugs inspector attached with the intelligence wing. As per the D&C Act, blood bags should be sold through licensed blood bank units.
According to him a patient, undergoing treatment at the Calicut Nursing Home, was given a blood bag from the hospital for Rs.400, but the actual price printed on the bag was Rs.80. Finding a huge difference in the MRP and the amount collected by the hospital authorities, he lodged a complaint with the drug control authorities. HLL is selling the products to the dealers only for Rs.30 with MRP of Rs.80, he added.
“The deadly diseases like AIDS are spreading through the unauthorized sale of blood and blood bags. The licensed retailers (Hospital with BB units) will conduct proper tests before transferring blood from a person to a patient. No legal tests are conducted in unauthorized centres,” Shaji said.
