Doctors at the Sunrise Hospital at Cochin, a pioneer in the minimally invasive keyhole surgery in the south Indian state, said many overseas patients preferred Kerala because the cost of the surgery is less in the state compared to other places. Dr R Padmakumar, Senior Consultant Surgeon and Medical Director of the hospital, who performed over 100 surgeries since the surgical option gained popularity as a treatment for the diabetics, said more than 20 per cent of the patients who underwent the surgery at his hospital were from outside India.
60 per cent of the patients came from United Arab Emirates (UAE), 20 per cent from Oman and the remaining from Kuwait, Nigeria and Australia.Dr Padmakumar, who has performed 20 surgeries at International Modern Hospital in Dubai in the last two years, said he could perform the surgery at lower cost because the cost of infrastructure facilities was less in the state.
