Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission has given Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) the green light for selling power to a remote village in Karnataka that borders with Kannur district in Kerala.

Makkoottam village in Karnataka is about 4km away from the Kerala border. Electricity has not reached this village where plantation workers and tribals live. Since the electric lines of Karnataka had not reached this village, the Chamundeswary Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) — the predecessor of Karnataka electricity board — had in 2011 sought KSEB’s help in electrifying the village, which is very close to Peravoor constituency in Kannur district.

According to CESC, it would bear the expense of drawing power lines to Makkoottam, which is less than a km from Peravoor assembly constituency in Kannur district. Based on CESC’s request, KSEB had taken an in-principle decision to sell 50 KVA power to Makkoottam village and sought the commission’s mandatory approval for signing a power purchase agreement (PPA) with CESC.

Based on CESC’s request, KSEB had taken an in principal decision to sell 50 KVA power to Makkoottam village and sought the commission’s mandatory approval for signing a power purchase agreement with CESC. The commission though cited no objection to the proposed move, refused to forgo the fee (Rs 2,00,000) due to the commission for considering the petition for approval of the proposed PPA and asked KSEB to pay the fees instead of collecting the same from the tribal settlement colony in Makoottam.
