Kerala Tourism Development Corporation opened its first hotel outside Kerala, in the city on Friday. The 90 room mid-budget hotel is designed on a unique business model. The property is built on Kerala government-owned land, but 90 per cent of the rooms are earmarked for commercial purposes and the rest are reserved as government guest houses.
“This is the first time we have looked at this model. It can be used by several State governments that have similar land in key cities,” said the marketing manager of KTDC, G S Rajmohan.
The property is aimed at several sections of tourists including those from Malaysia and North India who visit the city before heading to Kerala, and those who are headed for destinations like Port Blair before going to Kerala.
The highlight of the hotel is its centrality in terms of healthcare facilities like Apollo, transportation hubs like the Central and Egmore stations and cultural centres like the Lalit Kala Akademi and Music Academy. The rooms are priced at `2500 and `5000 for suites. “We are looking at retaining it as a mid-budget hotel. So the room tariffs have been placed in the context,” he said.
