Mining Spot in Kozhikode have been restricted by Kerala Government . The decision followed deliberations at a state Cabinet meeting on a note from Minister for Industries P K Kunhalikutty that sought a re-look at the in-principle permission granted in 2009 by the LDF government. Permission for iron ore mining in more than 700 hectares at Chakkittapara, Mavoor and Kakkur villages in the district has been cancelled.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters that the Cabinet had cancelled the permission in the backdrop of allegations of wrongdoing and a recent notification by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests prohibiting development activities including mining in the ecologically sensitive areas (ESA) of the Western Ghats.
