The state government’s proposal to set up regional higher secondary education directorates at Kannur, Malappuram and Kottayam remains in cold storage even after two years, with the Finance Department reportedly torpedoing it citing a funds crunch. “Based on the report of a committee, the Education Department has submitted a proposal for setting up the regional directorates in three districts to the Finance Department, which duly rejected it on the grounds of financial constraints,” said an Education Department official.
The UDF government had decided to set up new directorates after it was found that the present directorates at Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode were not able to function properly owing to work overload and shortage of staff. However, General Education Secretary K Elangovan said a revised proposal is pending before the Finance Department. “We now hope that the Finance Department will approve the revised proposal without further delay,” he said.
“The government should initiate immediate measures to implement the already announced proposal without any delay,” said K T Abdul Latheef, former president of the Kerala Higher Secondary Teachers Union.
