New Lands Program To Be Flag Off By Sonia Gandhi

The zero landless programme, aimed at providing land to landless families in the state, will be officially kicked off on September 7 by handing over the title deeds to the first batch of families. UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi will flag off the programme and the title deeds will be handed over to families from seven southern districts. However, the government’s promise to distribute land to one lakh families before August 15 this year will not materialise as the government has been able to demarcate only 75,859 plots of three cents each in 14 districts.

“We have identified the land but have been unable to demarcate the land for distribution due to monsoon and adverse climate this year,” revenue minister Adoor Prakash said here on Tuesday.

The maximum number of beneficiary families in the first phase has been identified in Thiruvananthapuram district, where interestingly only 3,342 plots have been prepared. The maximum land has been identified in Kasaragod and Kannur, which means that families from other districts will have to opt for plots there.

“If a beneficiary has been identified in a village and if there is a vacant plot available in that village, the first preference will be to offer them in the same village. The list of preference will be considered in the order of village, taluk and district,” the minister said.

In the first phase, land will be awarded to families in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Alappuzha. The selection of beneficiaries for awarding the land in the first phase will be undertaken at the respective district collectorates on August 29, 30 and 31.
