Nurses on protest in Kerala, demanding better remuneration and working conditions, who blockaded the Mother Hospital in Thrissur, were arrested by police. The blockade and protest were held at Oleri near Thrissur.
The nurses had blockaded the entrance to the hospital, prompting police to move in and arrest. Early reports indicated that several hundred nurses had gathered in front of the hospital to support their colleagues who were holding the strike. Among their demands is to take back into service some colleagues who were suspended by the hospital authorities.
The nurses resorted to the blockade after the talks with a high court-appointed mediation committee failed. The talks are expected to continue on Thursday. Prior to that, representatives of nurses and the private hospital managements had also held talks, without success.
Nurses’ representatives have warned that they would go on a state-wide protest strike from November 25 if their issues were not resolved through talks. Earlier this month, nurses in Thrissur had held a dharna in front of the hospital, organised a rally from the District Medical Officer’s office to the Corporation office, and held another march to the Swaraj Round in the city.
