Campus placements in engineering colleges have fallen, the waiting period for those shortlisted has gone up and the fat starting salaries with which IT majors lured bright graduates appears to have become a thing of the past. The starting salaries too are no longer what they used to be – it is just about Rs 12,000 now as compared to Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 till quite recently. “There is a 75% fall in recruitment’s this year in all engineering sectors.
In Cochin University of Science and Technology, last year 28 companies recruited 414 engineering students. However, this year, though 26 companies came for campus placement, only 196 students were given appointment offers. While the majority blame a weak economy and sluggish job market, higher education department joint secretary, M Sherif, admitted that falling standard of engineering students is also a matter of concern.
Except for TCS and Wipro, most companies have not shown any interest in mass recruitment’s. The waiting period has also got longer. With no major recruitment happening, students are being advised to pursue higher education. “The market is bad and there is no immediate solution at hand. Therefore, we are advising our students to go for either MTech or MBA” said Dr George Mathew, faculty in-charge, placement of engineering students at CUSAT.
