Agriculture Minister K. P. Mohanan opened an exhibition-cum-sale of saplings, organised by Green View– a collective of organic farmers, at the Muthalakkulam grounds in the city on Monday. The sale included that of seeds and saplings of a variety of fruits and vegetables.

The saplings are sold in a ready-to-plant fashion along with grow-bags and guidance on how to plant them. Nadan as well as hybrid varieties of vegetables are available at the stall. “It may not be convenient for those who dwell in the city to grow them in the field as majority of them would only have limited space around their house. That is why we also provide them with the grow-bags, which can be placed either at the yard or on the terrace,” says M.P. Rejul Kumar, president of Green View.

Saplings of drumstick, papaya, spinach, tomato, green chilly, brinjal, cabbage and cauliflower are available at the show while some of them also have their seeds for sale. A wide variety of local and hybrid fruits including mango, jack-fruit, guava, rambutan, durian, mangostin and velvet-apple are also available. “The hybrid jackfruits and mango trees will give fruits in three years,” said Mr. Rejul Kumar. “Arrangement have also been made to deliver bulk orders,” he said.

According to him, since the idea of a vegetable-garden on terrace was gaining popularity among the people, there are many buyers for the ready-to-plant saplings. “We have already sold out some varieties of the saplings on the initial day itself,” said Mr. Kumar, who added that arrangements had been made to make more saplings and seeds available for all those who need them.
