SIDCO and All Kerala Sawmill and Wood Industries Owners Association Joins hand

Kerala Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO) and the All Kerala Sawmill and Wood Industries Owners Association are joining hands to import timber. The Association will soon float a company and enter into an agreement with SIDCO after which the latter will invite global tenders for importing timber through Kochi, Mangalore or Tuticorin ports. The preliminary discussion between SIDCO and the Association in this regard was held in Thiruvananthapuram a few days ago. Speaking to Express, SIDCO chairman C T Ahammed Ali said the Association members have approached SIDCO, requesting to import timber to the state.
Association state president M O Jose Kumar said the direct import of timber through SIDCO would help decrease the price of timber by 10 to 20 percent in the state. As per statistics of the Association, timber import business in the state has an annual turnover of `1,500 crore while the total turnover of the industry including business of value-added products comes around `25,000 crore.
In terms of quantity, around 1 lakh cubic feet of timber is imported annually to the state. The Association plans to import woods namely pincoda, Burma teak, pine, merbau and sal from Burma, New Zealand and Africa.
