Spice Coast Open India’s first ever official national surfing and stand up paddle (SUP) competition, organised by Surfing Federation of India (SFI), will be held from May 3-5 at Kovalam beach in Kerala. The event will be held in four age categories in surfing and two in SUP. The organisers are expecting at least 50 foreigners and 100 Indian surfers to participate. By the end of this year, they hope to organise a similar event in Mangalore.
The best time of the year to hold surfing competition and other surf related events is around May, just before the onset of monsoon. SFI has joined hands with the International Surfing Association in its campaign to include surfing into the Olympics and other national and international multi-sport events.
South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes is the international surfing ambassador of India. Rhodes often surfs in India between stints as coach of the Mumbai Indians.
The event will also provide workshops, introductory classes on surfing and SUP, giving an opportunity for water sport enthusiasts to come and enjoy the new sport of surfing and its lifestyle. Off water, there will be many events such as live music, surf movie screenings, surf photo exhibition, surf and accessory shops and various beach programmes,” says SFI vice president Rammohan Paranjape .
