KSRTC Wants Low Floored Buses Services

Amidst directive by the High Court to the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) not to operate low-floor inter-district services to other depots, officials have submitted formal requests to the Chief Office seeking permission to extend the AC low-floor services to Thodupuzha.

KSRTC Assistant Transport Officer C K Radhakrishnan said the proposal was forwarded last week to the officials concerned.

“The High Court order had specifically mentioned that low-floor buses plying from Ernakulam to Kottayam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Malappuram and Thiruvananthapuram be suspended. The order does not currently hold for buses plying to Idukki district. It is in the wake of these orders that we decided to suspend all the

long-distance services, including the ones to Thodupuzha. And, we will operate the services only if we receive permission from the Chief Office,” Radhakrishnan said.He added that the KSRTC was still operating the Thiruvananthapuram-Ernakulam service since there were no orders against operating services from Thiruvananthapuram.

The KSRTC Ernakulam depot had been operating 5 buses to other districts to better revenue collection. The services were cancelled last month based on the High Court order. Out of the 80 AC buses which were allocated to Kerala, 30 were given to Thiruvananthapuram and 50 for Kochi.

Special officer for JNNURM projects, KSRTC and Chief Traffic Officer Sharaf Mohammed said KSRTC was not willing to go for an appeal against the order.

Officials at Ernakulam depot said they were currently operating the five buses which were used for inter-district services to different locations in the city. “ We are still studying the possibilities of operating the buses along profitable routes including Fort Kochi-Aroor, Ernakulam-Nedumbassery airport. We will fix a proper timetable after seeing whether the routes are profitable,” the officials said.
