People of Cochin can cheer up as the new stretch of Marine Drive walkway between KINCO boat jetty and Goshree bridges is in the final stages of construction. With the opening of the walkway and the newly-constructed Kettuvallam bridge, citizens would get a new space in to unwind and relax. “We have to complete the process of installing lights on the entire stretch. Now, we hope to organize the ceremony by mid-April,” said GCDA chairman N Venugopal.
Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) began construction of the walkway almost 14 moths ago. According to GCDA, they are giving ‘final touches’, which includes tiling and landscaping. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 7.5 crore.
The authority informed that six arches weighing 9 to 14 tonnes were used to build the Kettuvallam bridge that has been designed on the lines of a houseboat. It took four months to place the arches on the bridge. GCDA will also set up kiosks on the walkway without obstructing the view. The authority will also undertake the task of cleaning the railway canal and clear the thick undergrowth on the canal banks.
