The Kerala Agricultural University (KAU), with an aim to boost modernization of agriculture in the state, has set up a farm machinery testing centre (FMTC) and farm machinery museum at Kelappaji College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology (KCAET) at Tavanur in the district.

Minister for agriculture K P Mohanan will inaugurate the testing centre while E T Muhammed Basheer MP will dedicate the museum at KCAET at a function to be held on Monday.

According to KAU vice-chancellor P Rajendran, shortage of labourers and high wages are the two major issues that stand in the way of profitable cultivation in Kerala. “Though various types of machinery are being developed by several agencies, their suitability and efficiency remain untested. In order to ensure proper testing and certification of agricultural machinery, the Union government has accorded sanction to establish the testing centre,” he said.

The state government as part of a project – development of innovative farm mechanization (DIFM) package for Kerala – has already come out with machinery suitable for coconut, paddy and spices, vegetables etc. The farm machinery museum is being set up under a special project to facilitate collection, preservation and exhibition of newly-developed as well as traditional agricultural implements and machineries.
