The cash-strapped Kerala State Road Transport Corporation received another blow with the Kerala High Court directing it to roll back the inter-district A/C low-floor services allotted under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM ) project.

The court also asked the state government and the KSRTC to file an affidavit regarding the conditions imposed on the utilisation of buses under the JnNURM project when it was handed over to the KSRTC.

The court directed the corporation to immediately stop the services to destinations outside the city limits.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice A.M.Shaffique passed the order while considering a petition filed by High Court Advocate K.P.Pradeep and Kochi based Jose Christopher Xavier, challenging the decision of the KSRTC to conduct five services to other districts.

The KSRTC claimed that only five out of the 50 low floor buses meant for Kochi city were plying outside the city limits. The court directed that all services to Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur, Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram be stopped with immediate effect.

The court also asked whether all places within the Kochi city limits had a proper transportation system as envisaged by the Central government under the JnNURM project. The petitioners argued that low-floor buses should be operated within the city limits as mandated by JnNURM norms. But the KSRTC had violated the norms and guidelines, the petitioners argued.
