Kochi
A dedicated pipeline will be laid to carry LPG from Kochi to Coimbatore. Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), the authority vested with powers to sanction pipeline laying work, has invited bids for the job in the Kochi-Coimbatore sector and from there to Erode and Salem in Tamil Nadu.
BPCL Kochi Refinery has already submitted an expression of interest to PNGRB for laying the LPG pipeline from Kochi Coimbatore. It will have to participate in the bid along with other competitors and the successful bidder will be selected by PNGRB after the bidding process comes to a close by the end of the year.
The pipeline is expected to carry LPG received from BPCL Kochi which is undertaking a massive expansion project. One of the major advantages of the project is the avoidance of road transport for carrying LPG which involves hazard and which had reported a few fatal accidents in recent years.
The proposed pipeline is expected to source LPG from KRL as well as the Kochi LPG import terminal, a facility being established by Indian Oil Corporation Limited, the construction work of which has already started. The proposed pipeline will facilitate transport of LPG to IOCL’s LPG bottling plant at Coimbatore, thus reducing road movement of LPG tankers.
