Treatment of Cancer remains pipe dream for common man
In Kochi the Cancer care centre remains pipe dream for the comman man. Most of the patients in Kerala rely on the Regional Cancer Centre in Thiruvananthapuram and the Malabar Cancer Centre in Thalasseri for treatment. A similar facility in central Kerala remains a pipe dream as we observe another World Cancer Day and forget all about the message.
A cancer hospital and research centre with global standards was planned in Kochi taking into consideration the increasing number of cancer patients in Kerala. A data shows that Cancer patients from the northern districts still travel to Thiruvananthapuram,
The government has appointed cancer care expert Dr V.P. Gangadharan as special officer for the hospital which is expected to cost Rs 450 crore. Though the government initially proposed to rope in a private player to finance the project and then repay the investment in installments, it dropped the idea because it would not help the poor patients.
Thousands of cancer patients from Malabar still rely on the RCC for specialised care but the Malabar Cancer Centre in Kodiyeri near Thalasseri is also crying for government attention. The hospital was started in 2001 to replicate the success of the RCC in Malabar but it still has a long way to go.
