Vice-Admiral Anurag G. Thapliyal, Director General of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), visited its Beypore unit here on Saturday.

In his interaction with the officers here, he chalked out a detailed action plan for coastal security in view of the increased threats through the country’s vast coastline.

“We have been strengthening our coastal security after the 26/11 terror attack at Mumbai. Now we are in the process of acquiring more ships, vessels, aircrafts and various other most modern equipments. At present we have 85 ships and 62 aircrafts. The plan is to have 150 ships and 100 aircrafts by buying 65 more ships and 38 aircraft. It is being acquired and very soon we will have all these,” he said.

He said that thrust will be on indigenous equipment. The number of coastal stations has been increased from 20 to 42 after the Mumbai attacks, he said. Later, Mr. Thapliyal visited the Indian Coast Guard Academy at Azheekkal.
