CPM Meet: VS Achutanandan walks out
On friday the 21st state conference of CPM’s Kerala got reduced to a dirty as veteran leader VS Achutanandan went up to general secretary Prakash Karat, said ‘good bye’, and walked out of the venue.
Achutanandan, the only living member among the 32 National Council members of CPI who walked out to found CPM in 1964, was upset at the barrage of criticism raised against him by the “official faction” led by state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan during the meeting.
Achuthanandan walked out as the state committee annual report was being read out, a bulk of which was devoted to listing “anti-party activities” of Achutanandan.
The state meet happening in Alappuzha with central leaders like Karat and Sitaram Yechury in attendance is significant in that it is expected to mark a change in state leadership besides being a preparatory one for the All India CPM Congress slated for April. State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, the bete noire of Achutanandan, has been at the helm for 16 years, and is expected to make way for his close associate Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.
Sources close to Achuthanandan said the 91-year-old leader suspects the official faction was building up a case for his ouster from the party, and that he may quit on his own volition and go to “people’s court” to stay on top of things.
