Kerala Speaker passes away
G Karthikeyan(66) the Speaker of Kerala assembly, Former Minister and and Congress leader, is no more. He was undergoing treatment at the Health Care Global (HCG) hospital in Bengaluru after being diagnosed with cancer of the liver.
Karthikeyan, who was lodged in the ICU, breathed his last around 10.35 am on Saturday. Final rites of the leader are to be conducted at his home in Sasthamangalam at 6 pm on Sunday.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who was in Kochi, cancelled his official programmes and returned to the state capital when Karthikeyan’s condition turned critical. Ministers Ramesh Chennithala and M.K. Muneer are at the hospital in Bengaluru.
The state government has announced mourning for a week over the Speaker’s demise. Government has also declared a half-day holiday for all government offices and educational institutions in the state on Saturday.
Mourning his death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “My condolences to the family & well-wishers of Kerala Assembly Speaker, Shri G.Karthikeyan on his demise. May his soul rest in peace.”
“Shri G.Karthikeyan will be remembered as a grassroots leader who dedicated his life to serving the people of Kerala,” he added.
