Plagiarism row: President asks to take action
The President of India Pranab Mukherjee asks Kerala chief secretary to take appropriate action on a petition regarding the plagiarism charges against Kerala University pro-vice chancellor (PVC) N Veeramanikandan and intimate him about the action taken.
The president’s intervention comes following a petition submitted by higher education protection council convener R S Sasikumar. In his letter, President Mukherjee said the complaint itself was self-explanatory and the action taken on the complaint should be intimated to the complainant along with an intimation of the same to the office of the president.
The state government had earlier instructed Calicut university vice-chancellor to take appropriate action against PVC Veeramanikandan whose PhD thesis was done by copying a lot from the works done by other researchers.
Delhi University psychology professor N K Chadha, who scrutinized the PhD thesis, had come to a conclusion that 63% of the PhD thesis was plagiarized from various internet sources, books and other theses. Veeramanikandan was awarded PhD for his studies on the psychological impact of Asthma on patients
Calicut University, from where Veeramanikandan acquired his PhD, had recently sought an explanation from him on the issue.
Sources said the Kerala PVC has refuted the findings of Chadha and argued that the thesis was his original work and there was no valid basis for raising plagiarism charges against him. The university is expected to place the matter before the university syndicate to take a final decision.
