Oomen Chandy’s involment in solar scam alleged
The Kerala solar scam became solar eclips for the Chief Minister Oomen Chandy when the phone calls reveal his link with accused.
Mobile phone conversions between Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and a relative of an accused person in the solar panel scam have come out, indicating that Chandy had tried to help the accused, lodged in jail.
Solar panel scam had rattled the Congress government in Kerala in 2013, in which an alleged con woman Saritha S Nair had cheated several investors after promising them solar energy devises and stake in wind power farms. Three close aides of Chandy were sacked over their links with Nair. The scam had turned murkier after several Congress leaders links with Nair were exposed.
A judicial commission is probing into the scandal. On Tuesday, CPI legislator V S Sunil Kumar gave a statement to the commission that Chandy had helped an accused in the scandal. As a sequel to this, the accused person’s brother Rijesh on Wednesday released the tapes of the recorded conversations he had with Chandy, pleading to help his brother Manilal.
The conversations between Rijesh, a Congress worker from Thirssur, and Chandy had taken place in 2014. Manilal, who had been a technical manager with Nair’s solar firm, has been in jail for last 18 months.
In the two tapes, Rijesh was heard talking to Chandy, seeking his intervention for the release of Manilal. Rijesh introduces himself as a person connected with the solar case. He says the family is in a pathetic situation and Nair is threatening them.
Chandy told him that everything was told to P A Madhavan, who is a Congress legislator from Thrissur.
In another conversation, Rijesh told Chandy that he wanted to get his brother out of jail and they would not cause any trouble for him or his cabinet colleagues.
Reacting to the allegation, Chandy admitted that that he had conversations with Rijesh. Besides, Rijesh and his mother had met him seeking Manilal’s release. “He did not talk to me about the details of the case in which his brother was involved. When he introduced as a congress worker from Manaloor in Thrissur, I told him to meet the local legislator Madhavan,” Chandy added.
