Babu M Pallisery of the CPM alleged on Monday that Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Excise Minister K Babu had accepted Rs 100 crore as bribe from liquor companies to increase the price of liquor in the state. In the allegation, submitted in writing in the State Assembly, he said UB Group chairman Vijay Mallya attended the meeting in Dubai and Rs 100 crore was received by Shafi Mather, economic adviser to the Chief Minister, on behalf of the Excise Minister and the CM.
Meanwhile, the UB Group denied the allegations. “Vijay Mallya has never been involved in any representations or discussions with the Kerala Government or any minister regarding the excise policy or pricing. After formation of the current government, Mallya never met the Chief Minister or Excise Minister. The minister also denied introduction of free pricing for liquor companies.
“The liquor prices were raised by Beverages Corporation director board and the government had no role in it. When the prices were increased, the liquor companies got an additional revenue of Rs 49.9 crore. How can Rs 100 crore corruption take place?” he said.
