Kozhikode
The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) will give water connections to all applicants in the district from August 1 after obtaining a declaration from customers.
KWA will grant connections after getting an undertaking from the applicant that the authority will not liable for any shortage of water and that the applicant will pay the minimum charges fixed for maintaining the connection.
The fresh move was taken on the basis of the direction by the KWA managing director as part of the simplification procedure to avoid delays in getting water connection. The Kozhikode division of KWA has a total of 45,000 water connections in its limit and Vadakara division has 9,000. Kozhikode city alone requires 140 million litres of water per day (MLD), but KWA is able to supply only 70 MLD owing to shortage. The water is supplied to various parts of the city on alternate days from the three main pumping stations of Poolakkal, Mavoor and Poolakkadavu.
Assistant executive engineer A Rajan said the Rural Water Supply Sub Division of Malaparamba said that at present KWA provides water on alternate days owing to scarcity.
“KWA has directed us to obtain an undertaking from each customer before providing connections considering the problem of water supply disruption that might occur when we start providing connections to several customers,” he said.
