On Monday, CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of the Opposition V S Achuthanandan did repeat calls for the resignation of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy but the tone was palpably cautious. Thettayil, facing charges of sexual abuse, stayed off the Legislative Assembly session but the case is likely to take some vigour off the Opposition’s attack on the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government.
During the Assembly session, Achuthanandan criticised the chief minister for his support to his gunman Salimraj, who is under the scanner for links with the solar panel fraud.
The Opposition leader, while making a reference to the chief minister’s family in this connection, was stopped short by Speaker G Karthikeyan.
The Thettayil issue was not discussed during the session. According to sources, the Opposition is waiting for Janata Dal-Secular decision on the issue before chalking out fresh strategies to bolster its ongoing protests against the government.
