Four Kerala stations included in the station based e-catering service
Broadening the ambit of its popular e-catering service, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd. (IRCTC) has decided to launch station-based e-catering service at 45 stations, including four in Kerala. The service will allow passengers to order food of their choice from leading private caterers, to be delivered at the station.
The station-based e-catering facility, which will be introduced in a phased manner, will be available in all trains passing through the 45 selected stations.
The service will allow passengers to order meals while travelling, either online at www.ecatering.irctc.co.in or by calling 0120-2383892-99 / 1800-1034-139 (toll free). Meals can also be ordered by sending SMS to 139 with details of PNR and seat number. Besides e-catering, the IRCTC also makes available meals from Jan Ahaar (budget food), food plazas and fast food units.
It is for the first time since its launch in September last year that e-catering service is being introduced at stations. As of now, the facility is available in 1,516 non-pantry car trains.
The IRCTC, a Mini Ratna PSU of India Railways, will soon float expression of interest (EoI) seeking participation of experienced professionals and reputed food chains like KFC, McDonalds, Haldiram, Bikanerwala, Nirualas, Sagar Ratna, Wangs Kitchen, Sarvana Bhavan, Subway, Dominos Pizza, Pizza Hut and Kelloggs. A minimum of five vendors/brands will be shortlisted or empanelled by the IRCTC for every station to ensure availability of a wide variety of food items.
The new facility is being launched in accordance with the announcement in this years Railway Budget on progressive launch of e-catering service. IRCTC will also develop mobile-based applications to popularise the service.
