One more killed in Kerala political clashes
A series of clashes were reported on Saturday from different parts of Kerala, after two murders on Onam day shook the state.
On Friday, the most important day of the Onam festival week in the state, a Communist Party of India Marxist worker, C. Narayanan, was murdered in the northern-most district, Kasaragod, while a Bharatiya Janata Party worker, Abhilash, was killed at Vellikulangara in Thrissur. Narayanan’s brother, Aravindan was also seriously injured in the attack at Kasaragod.
The killings sparked fears that another spate of political killings had been triggered in the state. Both the CPM and the BJP had called for strikes on Saturday in the respective districts where their members were killed.
In Kasaragod, the strike was almost complete, with shops and other establishments remaining closed, and minimal traffic on the roads. In Thrissur, the BJP-initiated strikes at Pudukad and Kodakara had a partial impact.
In fresh violence Saturday, two Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh workers were stabbed in Thodupuzha and the CPM area committee office was attacked. At Azhikode in Kannur district, several houses and party offices were attacked. The two stab victims were admitted to a hospital at Kolenchery.
The Azhikode attacks were targeted at the houses of CPM and RSS workers. Over a dozen homes were pelted with stones in the area, and four persons were reported injured.
Kerala home minister Ramesh Chennithala said he suspected there was concerted scheming behind the attacks carried out on Friday. He said the government would put down such violence irrespective of who was behind the attacks.
CPM politburo member, Pinarayi Vijayan said it was an unholy alliance between the RSS and the ruling United Democratic Front that was behind the attacks on CPM cadres.
