Rift Between Kerala Muslim League and Kerala Congress

Thiruvananthapuram
A new rift has been created between the Congress and Indian Union Muslim League units in Kerala, following some unpleasant remarks by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala, and his party colleague and minister Aryadan Mohammad.
The IUML today aired its displeasure in no uncertain terms when the party’s general secretary KPA Majeed warned that “IUML is not a drum that any passerby can beat”. This is the strongest statement from the IUML top leadership since Chennithala’s statement that a former KPCC president had warned to treat the IUML with caution.
While chief minister Oommen Chandy sought to play down the rift between the two coalition partners in the ruling United Democratic Front by stating that Chennithala’s statement was twisted in the media, Aryadan Mohammad fired another salvo against the IUML, pointing out in Delhi today that “the IUML flag is green and ours is the tricolor. We are only united by our poll manifesto”.
The unease in relationship between the two parties has led to a postponement of the coalition meeting that was scheduled for Tuesday. The IUML feels that the mood is not ideal to go ahead with the coalition meeting in the backdrop of the adverse comments against the party. The matter has also come to the notice of the Congress high command.
