State govt to build dormitory in Delhi for visitors

To help people from Kerala who visit the national capital, the state government would construct a dormitory here with a capacity to accommodate 200 persons.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy announced this today while addressing a gathering after inaugurating the renovated Cochin House and laying the foundation stone of Travancore Palace Heritage Conservation Project here.

“The proposed dormitory would be helpful for the people visiting Delhi from Kerala for various purposes including excursion,” he said while adding that there are plans for commencing the project this year.

The Chief Minister said that the views of MPs would also be sought for projects planned in properties of Kerala Government situated in Delhi and a committee would be set up for the purpose.

Later, Kerala PWD Minister Ibrahim Kunju said that paper work for the dormitory project has almost been completed by the PWD and administrative departments.

The work will start after the clearance by the state cabinet, he added.

On the renovation of 100-year-old Cochin House, a heritage building situated in Kerala House at Jantar Mantar, the Minister said that funds to the tune of Rs 8 crore were spent on the project.

The Cochin House would be used by Chief Minister, Governor and other VIPs during their visits, he said.

The renovation of Travancore Palace would be completed in a year’s time, he added.
